Asian journalists are invited to apply for the Konrad Adenauer Asian Center for Journalism's (ACFJ) 2009 fellowships for the Master of Arts in Journalism at the Philippines' Ateneo de Manila University. Deadline: January 16, 2009.
According to an AFCJ statement, 15 fellowships are awarded yearly to full-time Asian journalists "who have outstanding professional and academic record, a strong commitment to good journalism and leadership qualities."
Designed for working journalists, the two-year M.A. in Journalism program is an online distance learning program with limited classroom sessions held at the Ateneo campus in Quezon City, Metro Manila, Philippines.
The curriculum consists of 12 courses including specialized reporting and writing courses such as international reporting, investigative journalism and reporting about religions.

Photojournalism workshop to be held in the Indian Himalaya

A workshop in Manali in the Indian Himalaya aims to help emerging photojournalists hone their skills, meet experienced shooters, network, and develop their own vision as storytellers.
The Foundry Photojournalism Workshop 2009 will take place July 26 to August 1, 2009. Participants can reserve their spot with a US$100 deposit by January 1, 2009.
Classes are divided into multiple experience levels: intro, medium, and advanced/master. Spots are limited to 100 students. Registration is first come first served.
Tuition for South Asian journalists costs US$450, which includes six days of classes, slideshows, panels, parties, portfolio reviews, and other workshop events.

Producers invited to create children's TV programs to strengthen cultural diversity

Children's TV progam producers from Asia, Africa and the Arab world are invited to take part in the second round of production of short program series for children that aim to strengthen cultural diversity and create a better understanding among children about various cultures and school of thoughts.
The first round of the program, which is called "I Am ... ," produced 14 short TV programs that show how children view topics such as religion, family, and pollution, according to the Asia-Pacific Institute for Broadcasting Development (AIBD), one of the sponsors.
AIBD, along with the Southern African Broadcasting Association (SABU) and the Arab States Broadcasting Union (ASBU), recently announced the 2009 project.
It will begin in 2009 with workshops on children's TV program production; three workshops will be organized in parallel in Johannesburg, Tunis and Kuala Lumpur.
With the support of two senior Executive Producers, the 40 participating producers will each produce their own programs.

Youth essay contest to award cash prizes, publication

Students and young professionals ages 18-30 are invited to enter a youth essay competition that encourages youth around the world to get involved in a global civic discussion on issues that concern them.
The contest, being sponsored by the U.S.-based Center for International Private Enterprise (CIPE), features three general topics: Citizenship in a Democratic Society, Educational Reform and Employment Opportunities, and Entrepreneurship & Leadership.
Essays should be 2,000-4,000 words in length and must be submitted by March 1, 2009. CIPE is offering a US$1,000 honorarium for the winners, and will publish the top three winning essays via its Economic Reform Feature Service, which is distributed to more than 3,000 subscribers.

A new organization is seeking young journalists age 23-28 from around the world who are interested in national and international issues including current affairs, media and environment.
Chosen journalists will write a weekly blog for the organization's Web site, which is committed to finding leaders of the future.
English preferred but all languages welcome. Chosen bloggers will have the opportunity to attend the inaugural summit of the organization - One Young World - in London, from July 6 to 9, 2009.
The One Young World summit will be live-streamed to the Internet, and will consist of potential young leaders from every country in the world, and from all sectors, considering resolutions on the role of global business, of politicians, the influence of the media, the environment and co-operation among world religions. The Opening Ceremony will be led by Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

Journalists who live in Asia are invited to apply for a fellowship to study for three months at Nanyang Technological University's communication school in Singapore. Deadline: November 15.
The Asia Journalism Fellowships provide a three-month break for active journalists to improve their professional skills and deepen their understanding of media trends. Fellows will participate in informal seminars and intensive workshops, as well as meet with key newsmakers in Singapore.
Candidates must have at least five years of journalism experience in any medium, leadership potential, and be fluent in English. Freelancers are welcome to apply.
Participants will receive airfare, accommodation, and a stipend of US$1,500 per month.

Media invited on trip to most cluster bomb affected country

Journalists can join a media trip to Laos, the country most affected by cluster bombs in the world, from October 19 to 21.
The Cluster Munition Coalition is organising the trip, which comes ahead of the signing of a groundbreaking treaty banning cluster bombs by over 100 governments in December.
The trip will include interviews with victims in and around their homes, access to hospitals, a prosthetic limb center, the chance to film/photograph clearance teams including a live demolition and a visit to The Plain of Jars, the heritage site denied to the world because of extensive cluster bomb contamination.
The final day of the trip will be at the South East Asia regional conference on the Convention on Cluster Munitions.
Journalists can join the trip at any point, but will be expected to cover their own flight and hotel costs.

Undergraduate and graduate students who are interested in working in journalism may attend a journalism training workshop on November 29 in Tokyo, Japan. Deadline: November 14.
Organized by the Foreign Correspondents' Club of Japan (FCCJ), the workshop will provide an introduction to journalism. Students will learn about interviewing, fact-gathering and writing techniques, as well as participate in a mock news event, including a mock press conference.
Participants may enter their names on a part-time student assistant list that will be made available to FCCJ journalists, who are interested in hiring a news assistant.
The all-day event is open to foreigners and will be conducted in English. There are 60 spots available. Registration costs 2,000 yen (about US$19.50), which includes lunch.

Global Undergraduate Exchange Program for FY 2009
The Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy is pleased to announce the opportunity to compete for the 2009 Global Undergraduate Exchange Program (Global UGRAD Program) which is sponsored by the Educational and Cultural Affairs Office of the U.S. Department of State.
The Global UGRAD Program will provide one-semester and academic-year scholarships to outstanding undergraduates for non-degree programs at accredited U.S. institutions. Scholarships will be available in all academic fields of study except Medicine, Nursing, Veterinary medicine, and Pharmacology.
The length and start date of the scholarship award will depend upon the applicant's interests, the need for pre-program English language training, as well as placement option and availability of funds. Students accepted into the full academic year program will travel to the U.S. for the fall 2009. Students accepted into the one-semester program will travel for the fall 2009 or in the winter (January) 2010.
Eligible applicants must:
- Be currently enrolled in an undergraduate degree program and who will have completed their first year of undergraduate study prior to starting their UGRAD Program.
- Have at least one semester or an equivalent term to complete at their home institutions upon completion of their UGRAD Program. The UGRAD semester or academic year must not be the last academic term of their undergraduate study.
- Be highly motivated non-elite or less-privileged undergraduate students who demonstrate leadership through academic work, community involvement, and extracurricular activities.
- Have a good knowledge of English with minimum TOEFL score of 500 or 173 on Computer based TOEFL, 61 on Internet-based TOEFL.
- Have no previous study experience in the United States.

Interested students who do not already have an official TOEFL score of 500 or above should plan to take the Institutional TOEFL Practice (ITP) on November 1, 2008 at the Royal University of Phnom Penh. Registration for the ITP is available through the Educational Advising Center at RUPP (room 103) from Monday-Friday, with a registration deadline of October 24, 2008. College journalism students invited to Washington, D.C.

College journalism students are invited to apply for the 2009 Scripps Howard Foundation Semester in Washington Program. Six chosen interns, including one international student, will work for Scripps Howard in Washington, D.C.
Interns' stories are published on a Web-based wire: www.shfwire.com. Some of their stories may go to the Scripps Howard News Service's 400 client newspapers. Interns may write for hometown or campus newspapers and earn internship or independent study credits through their universities.
Participants will also tour Washington journalism and government institutions, hear from guest speakers and meet weekly to discuss issues in journalism.
The program is open to college students studying print or online journalism. It is not open to graduates or graduate students. Participants will receive a stipend and free housing in furnished apartments in Washington.

The Washington, D.C.-based National Endowment for Democracy (NED) invites journalists worldwide to apply to be part of the 2009-2010 Reagan-Fascell Democracy Fellows Program. Selected fellows will take up residence at the Forum, a research division of NED, for five to ten months. Deadline: November 10.
According to its organizers, the fellowship seeks to provide experienced journalists with an opportunity to reflect on their work, learn from counterparts in the United States, and reevaluate techniques for building democracy in their country of origin. Projects must be in English.
Each participant will receive a monthly stipend for living expenses, health insurance and reimbursement for travel. Fellows also receive a fully equipped office and research support.

Duties and Responsibilities

Australian Seafood CRC Postgraduate Scholarship

In collaboration with Flinders University, DPI Victoria, SARDI Aquatic Sciences, The Abalone Council Australia and The Australian Abalone Growers Association, the Australian Seafood CRC offers a scholarship of $26,140 per annum for three years for a Postgraduate Student. The scholarship has an additional operating budget of at least $5,000 per year for three years and $300 towards thesis binding in the third year. A further $1,000 per year is also available for defined mentor activities to be approved by the CRC. As a Seafood CRC student the successful candidate will be fully engaged in the CRC PhD program which will support the development of the student as a scientist in a number of innovative ways through annual workshops and mentoring programs.
We are looking to appoint a postgraduate scholar to a project that is investigating Abalone Viral Ganglioneuritis (AVG), which is currently decimating populations in Victoria and nationally threatens the abalone fishing and aquaculture industries. This project seeks to address whether abalone can carry this virus without displaying clinical signs and determine whether abalone have differential antiviral activity that correlates with disease resistance. Overall, this project will enhance biosecurity preparedness and response in the abalone industries through the detection and development of AVG-resistant, AVG virusfree populations.
- First class or high 2A honours degree, master's degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline (e.g. Biotechnology, Cell and Molecular Biology, Fisheries or Aquaculture).
- Ability and experience in working both independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team.
- Strong written and oral communication skills, including an ability to publish and present results of scientific research and to communicate in a variety of scientific and non-scientific forums.
- Knowledge, understanding and commitment to Equal Employment Opportunity, Occupational Health and Safety including biosafety, Workplace Diversity and Employee Participation.
Selection criteria – desirable - A commitment to applied research and an interest in supporting the development of Australia's seafood industry.
- Demonstrated ability to undertake cell culture and handling of live viruses.
- Demonstrated ability to perform laboratory based procedures (e.g. animal dissection, DNA extraction, PCR, cytotoxicity and antiviral assays).

Opening
This module provides an overview of the entire programme, and includes interactive ice-breaking exercises and sub-regional presentations by participants.
Starting with a session on mind, body and soul for holistic lifestyle approaches to environment for sustainable development, this module highlights the human dimension of the overall framework and guides the participants on essential environmental leadership qualities and skills.
Detailed sessions on pressing issues of the environment dimension will be made in this module. Sessions include the physical environment (air, water and land), the built environment, climate change, natural resources management, and institutional frameworks for sustainable development.
Focusing on the social dimension of sustainable development, this module provides lectures and case studies on sustainable development. It includes topics such as poverty and the environment, engagement of civil society, and environmental awareness issues.
During the field trip, participants will get an opportunity to examine issues of sustainable development and reflect upon the lessons learnt from a practical perspective.

IWC Water Leader Scholarships

International scholarships will cover full tuition costs of the three semester MIWM Program as well as Overseas Student Health Cover for the duration of the Program.
Scholarships for Australian citizens and residents include both full-tuition and partial-tuition scholarships for the three semester Program.
IWC Water Leader Scholarships do not include travel, accommodation allowance, living stipend, field work or course material costs. It will be the responsibility of successful applicants to cover these costs.
Those interested in applying for an IWC Water Leaders Scholarship must meet the minimum eligibility requirements outlined below.
MIWM Program Entry Requirements (See also Applying to the Masters Program):
- A four year undergraduate degree in a related field of study from an internationally-recognised institution. Applicants must have completed a university level qualification which is at least equivalent in standard to an Australian four year degree. If you are unsure whether your previous university qualification(s) is equivalent in standard to an Australian four year degree, you should seek advice from the Australian Education Centre in your home country or region, or contact UQ International Education Directorate.
- A minimum of two years practical experience in a related field is preferred but not required.
Citizenship and Visa Status
Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents and international applicants are eligible and encouraged to apply. Successful international applicants must meet visa requirements of the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship.
Selection Criteria and Process
Applicants will be assessed by The University of Queensland to ensure they meet minimum requirements for entry into MIWM Program. Students will also be assessed for the Water Leaders Scholarships by a selection panel at the International WaterCentre. The selection panel will adhere to IWC's policy of non-discrimination for this process. Decisions of the selection panel are final and confidential. IWC will not enter into correspondence regarding outcomes of the selection process.
Applicants are required to respond to the following selection criteria:
- Commitment to the International WaterCentre's mission and to whole-of-water cycle, integrated and interdisciplinary approaches to water management.
- Leadership qualities: As demonstrated by professional, educational, community and other achievements. Leadership qualities include collaboration and team work, flexibility, initiative, communication skills, integrity and vision.
- Academic record: Successful applicants will demonstrate a high level of academic achievement and likelihood of success in further study.
- Professional record: As demonstrated by employment experience, awards and achievements, membership of professional bodies and professional references.

Rotary World Peace Fellowships
Rotary Centers provide Rotary World Peace Fellows with the opportunity to pursue a master's degree in conflict resolution, peace studies, international relations, and related areas.
Each year, up to 60 Rotary World Peace Fellowships are offered on a competitive basis at six Rotary Centers, which operate in partnership with seven leading universities:
- Duke University and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, USA (joint Rotary Center)
- International Christian University, Tokyo, Japan
- Universidad del Salvador, Buenos Aires, Argentina
- University of Bradford, West Yorkshire, England
