2009 Journalism Award: Apply now!

 

Dear friends of the IIJ, dear alumni, dear colleagues,

We would like to turn your attention to a journalism competition that the Asian Development Bank Institute has initiated. The competition is called "2009 annual Developing Asia Journalism Awards (DAJA) competition" and journalists from developing Asia and the Pacific are invited to submit published articles written in 2008 or 2009.

The subject matter of the articles should be in line with one of the following four categories:

• Poverty impact of the global financial crisis
• Government responses to the global financial crisis
• Infrastructure development
• Climate change adaptation.

The closing date for entries is Wednesday, 15 July 2009, 6.00 pm, Tokyo time.

Upcoming Jefferson fellowships to focus on climate change

Journalists in the U.S., the Pacific Islands and Asia can now apply for the fall 2009 Jefferson Fellowships, which will focus on climate change under the theme: "The right climate for confronting climate change?" Deadline: June 17.

The three-week fellowships, a program of the Hawaii-based East West Center, will explore the ability of U.S. domestic and foreign policy to confront the important economic challenges and opportunities involved in addressing climate change and its consequences. Participating journalists will be able to broaden their understanding of Asia Pacific issues and build a professional network.

Beginning October 25, the program will begin with one week of dialogue with professional colleagues and experts at the East-West Center, followed by a two-week study tour to cities in Asia or the U.S.

Applicants must have at least five years' professional experience and a good level of spoken and written English.

Vietnam workshop to focus on crisis, disaster reporting

Journalists from South East Asian countries are invited to apply for a five day workshop on reporting on crises and disasters, to take place in Vietnam June 22 to 26. Deadline: May 11.

The workshop will discuss the challenges and techniques involved in covering international-scale crises and disasters, using Reuters and other world news organizations as models.

Through briefings and practical writing exercises against deadlines, the course will help journalists improve their skills and recognize problem areas within an interactive group environment. The program is jointly organized by the Thomson Reuters Foundation and Vietnam Television (VTV).

Applicants must have at least two years' professional experience and a good level in spoken and written English.
