"Antiviral activity and resistance to Abalone viral Ganglioneuritis."

In collaboration with Flinders University, DPI Victoria, SARDI Aquatic Sciences, The Abalone Council Australia and The Australian Abalone Growers Association, the Australian Seafood CRC offers a scholarship of $26,140 per annum for three years for a Postgraduate Student. The scholarship has an additional operating budget of at least $5,000 per year for three years and $300 towards thesis binding in the third year. A further $1,000 per year is also available for defined mentor activities to be approved by the CRC. As a Seafood CRC student the successful candidate will be fully engaged in the CRC PhD program which will support the development of the student as a scientist in a number of innovative ways through annual workshops and mentoring programs.
Project description
We are looking to appoint a postgraduate scholar to a project that is investigating Abalone Viral Ganglioneuritis (AVG), which is currently decimating populations in Victoria and nationally threatens the abalone fishing and aquaculture industries. This project seeks to address whether abalone can carry this virus without displaying clinical signs and determine whether abalone have differential antiviral activity that correlates with disease resistance. Overall, this project will enhance biosecurity preparedness and response in the abalone industries through the detection and development of AVG-resistant, AVG virusfree populations.
The student will be enrolled at Flinders University, Adelaide but the position will require some travel to Victoria for PCR training at DPI Vic and for the collection and processing of abalone. The student will be co-supervised at Flinders by Dr. Kirsten Benkendorff, who has over 10 years of experience in molluscan immunity and Dr Peter Speck, a herpes virologist with specific expertise in the application of the anti-HSV assays and the identification of herpes-like viruses and associated pathology. External collaborators in the project include mentors from Government research organization and Industry; Dr Mehdi Dourdi (SARDI aquatic sciences), Dr Simone Warner (DPI Vic), Dr Mark Crane (C.S.I.R.O. Australian Animal Health Laboratory); Dr Ann Fleming (Australian Abalone Growers Association) and Mr Michael Tokley (Abalone Council Australia).
Selection criteria – essential
  1. First class or high 2A honours degree, master's degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline (e.g. Biotechnology, Cell and Molecular Biology, Fisheries or Aquaculture).
  2. Ability and experience in working both independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team.
  3. Strong written and oral communication skills, including an ability to publish and present results of scientific research and to communicate in a variety of scientific and non-scientific forums.
  4. Knowledge, understanding and commitment to Equal Employment Opportunity, Occupational Health and Safety including biosafety, Workplace Diversity and Employee Participation.

    Selection criteria – desirable
  5. A commitment to applied research and an interest in supporting the development of Australia's seafood industry.
  6. Demonstrated ability to undertake cell culture and handling of live viruses.
  7. Demonstrated ability to perform laboratory based procedures (e.g. animal dissection, DNA extraction, PCR, cytotoxicity and antiviral assays).

The Asia-Pacific Young Leaders Programme on Environment for Sustainable Development is conducted by IESD (Institute of Environment for Sustainable Development), which was jointly established in May 2002 by the United Nations Environment Programme and Tongji University.
The program is designed to provide young and promising professionals an opportunity in broadening their knowledge on environment for sustainable development, and to establish a network of young environmental leaders in the Asia-Pacific region on environment for sustainable development.
The Asia Pacific Young Leaders Programme on Environment for Sustainable Development is supported by Mr Hong Luo and expected to be replicated to other regions on a global scale during subsequent years. Other partners include members of the Regional University Consortium and Hanns Seidel Foundation.
The Programme will be held in Shanghai from 15-19 September 2008. The interactive sessions of the 2008 Leadership Programme will be offered by professors of Tongji University, RUC and well-known scholars and leaders from the Asia-Pacific region as well as UNEP officials. It includes field trip/case study, interactive exercise and participant presentations.
Financial Support
The tuition of the programme for self-supported participants, excluding travel and living expenses, is approximately US$2,000. Limited financial resources are available to support candidates from developing countries. Should you require financial support, please specify this in the application form.
Challenges
Opening
This module provides an overview of the entire programme, and includes interactive ice-breaking exercises and sub-regional presentations by participants.
Human Dimension
Starting with a session on mind, body and soul for holistic lifestyle approaches to environment for sustainable development, this module highlights the human dimension of the overall framework and guides the participants on essential environmental leadership qualities and skills.
Environment Dimension
Detailed sessions on pressing issues of the environment dimension will be made in this module. Sessions include the physical environment (air, water and land), the built environment, climate change, natural resources management, and institutional frameworks for sustainable development.
Social Dimension
Focusing on the social dimension of sustainable development, this module provides lectures and case studies on sustainable development. It includes topics such as poverty and the environment, engagement of civil society, and environmental awareness issues.
Field Trip
During the field trip, participants will get an opportunity to examine issues of sustainable development and reflect upon the lessons learnt from a practical perspective.
Synthesis
The participants will work on an interactive pyramid exercise to synthesize the knowledge learned from the various modules.

The Asian Development Bank Institute (ADBI) announced today it is again sponsoring the Developing Asia Journalism Awards (DAJA) to acknowledge Asian and Pacific print journalists who cover development trends and the impact these have on the countries and people of the region.
This year they will focus on excellence in journalistic reporting in four strategic areas of development.
Awards will be based on a journalist's works (published and non-published including those in translation) during 2007-08. The best 25 submitted articles will be selected by a distinguished jury of practicing journalists and their authors will be invited to a four-day training and awards program in Tokyo in November 2008. Winners in the following categories and prizes will be selected from these 25 articles and awards will be given at the conclusion of the program.

Additional special prizes will be awarded for:

Australian citizens, permanent residents and international applicants for the Semester 1 intake of the Master of Integrated Water Management (MIWM) Program.Value of Scholarship
International scholarships will cover full tuition costs of the three semester MIWM Program as well as Overseas Student Health Cover for the duration of the Program.

Scholarships for Australian citizens and residents include both full-tuition and partial-tuition scholarships for the three semester Program.

IWC Water Leader Scholarships do not include travel, accommodation allowance, living stipend, field work or course material costs. It will be the responsibility of successful applicants to cover these costs.
Eligibility
Those interested in applying for an IWC Water Leaders Scholarship must meet the minimum eligibility requirements outlined below.
MIWM Program Entry Requirements (See also Applying to the Masters Program):
  • A four year undergraduate degree in a related field of study from an internationally-recognised institution. Applicants must have completed a university level qualification which is at least equivalent in standard to an Australian four year degree. If you are unsure whether your previous university qualification(s) is equivalent in standard to an Australian four year degree, you should seek advice from the Australian Education Centre in your home country or region, or contact UQ International Education Directorate.
  • Demonstrated English language proficiency (see www.uq.edu.au/international/language-requirements);
  • A minimum of two years practical experience in a related field is preferred but not required.

Citizenship and Visa Status
Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents and international applicants are eligible and encouraged to apply. Successful international applicants must meet visa requirements of the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship.

Selection Criteria and Process
Applicants will be assessed by The University of Queensland to ensure they meet minimum requirements for entry into MIWM Program. Students will also be assessed for the Water Leaders Scholarships by a selection panel at the International WaterCentre. The selection panel will adhere to IWC's policy of non-discrimination for this process. Decisions of the selection panel are final and confidential. IWC will not enter into correspondence regarding outcomes of the selection process.

  • Commitment to the International WaterCentre's mission and to whole-of-water cycle, integrated and interdisciplinary approaches to water management.

The Caucasus Institute will offer a new Master's of Arts curriculum in journalism, photojournalism and political science, which requires students to enroll full-time for two years, or a one-year vocational course, starting October 1. The deadline to apply is August 1.    

Courses in the curriculum are based on European standards and focus on practical reporting as well as the production of news. The supervisor will be French journalist Laurence Ritter.

Print and online journalists in developing countries are invited to apply for the Alfred Friendly Press Fellowships (AFPF) and Daniel Pearl Fellowships 2009. Deadline for the submission of applications: August 1.

Successful candidates will report for American newspapers from March to August 2009. In the United States, fellows will learn practices, standards and values of U.S. journalism which they can adapt, share and apply in their own countries.

Applicants for the fellowships must be between 25- and 35-years-old and currently employed full time for the news or editorial department of an independent newspaper, wire service, online publication, or magazine.

Applicants must be fluent in both written and spoken English.

‘Writing international news’ course to be held in London

An upcoming course four journalists will focus on the writing of international news, with an emphasis on improving basic reporting skills including accuracy, impartiality, speed, clarity and structure. Deadline to apply: August 31.
The program, a training course of the Reuters Foundation, will take place from September 22 to October 3. It will be held in London.
Applicants must currently be working as journalists or regular contributors to print, broadcast or online media organizations. They must be able to demonstrate a commitment to a career in journalism in their country, have at least two years' professional experience and have a good level in spoken and written English.

Rotary World Peace Fellowships

Rotary Centers provide Rotary World Peace Fellows with the opportunity to pursue a master's degree in conflict resolution, peace studies, international relations, and related areas.

Each year, up to 60 Rotary World Peace Fellowships are offered on a competitive basis at six Rotary Centers, which operate in partnership with seven leading universities:


Coursework at the Rotary Centers focuses on preventing and resolving conflict by addressing its root causes ― for example, responding to hunger with food security, disease with health care, illiteracy with education, poverty with sustainable development, and environmental degradation with conservation. Fellows put classroom lessons into practice through an applied field experience, when they work with a variety of governmental and nongovernmental organizations worldwide.

Graduate Scholarship for Foreign Excellent Students Program

In order to provide foreign students with more equal opportunities, the applying method for the 『Graduate Scholarship for Foreign Excellent Students Program』 will be the same as the application process for foreign students and it will be available online at http://admission.snu.ac.kr.

This change will take place starting from the first semester in 2009. While the Office of International Affairs will deal with the overall program, the office in charge of registration will be the office of admissions.

For those who are interested in the 『Graduate Scholarship for Foreign Excellent Students Program』 apply online by 18:00(Thursday) July 31st 2008 and send the original documents to the office of admissions by 18:00(Friday) August 1st 2008.

We plan to place a notice about the eligible countries and universities, the number of students per major and information on financial support online by early July 2008. The online applicants will be filtered and categorized by their university of graduation. The final decision will be made by the screening committee.

Press Fellowship 2008

From now until August 1, 2008 applications are being accepted from print and online journalists for the 2009 Alfred Friendly and Daniel Pearl Fellowships. Successful candidates will report for American newspapers from March-August 2009. Since 1984, AFPF has provided on- the-job training to 258 journalists from 78 developing countries. In the United States Fellow learn practices, standards and values of U.S.
journalism which they can adapt, share and apply in their own countries.

Attached please find information about AFPF including an application for the 2009 program. Please share these materials with mid-career journalists who you feel are appropriate for this program. The application is also available at http://www.pressfellowships.org/application.html.

Applicants for the fellowships must meet the following minimum criteria of eligibility:

-Current full-time employment as a journalist for the news or editorial departments of independent newspapers, wire services, online publications, or magazines of general public interest in a developing country;

- Citizenship of a developing country;
- Early to mid-career status and between 25 and 35 years old;

The Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF),

The Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF), the National Centre for Research on Europe (NCRE)  and the College of Europe welcome proposals for participation in the European Studies in Asia (ESiA) 1st Young Academics' Workshop "How is the EU Perceived in Asia: Media, Public and Elite Perceptions", which will take place in Bruges, Belgium, on 1-4 September 2008. 

 

The European Studies in Asia (ESiA) network initiated the "EU through the Eyes of Asia" project, a pioneering attempt to scientifically measure media, public and elite perceptions regarding the EU specifically in the Asian region. Focusing on selected Asian countries that are part of the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) process [[1]], the pilot study was undertaken in China, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Singapore and Thailand from 2006 to 2007. In all locations, the methodology involved monitoring images of the EU in the media; administering a public opinion survey; and conducting a series of elite interviews.

 

While the project continues to expand, having recently been launched in Indonesia, the Philippines and Vietnam in the beginning of 2008, the initial phase has already produced a wealth of data regarding the perceptions of the EU in Asia that is unique and can enrich European studies scholarship in both Asia and Europe.

 

ESiA's Young Academics' Workshop is a new series initiated specifically to provide a platform for next generation European studies academics in Asia and Europe to exchange ideas, acquire new skills and present their work to the larger European studies community.

 

The first Young Academics' Workshop will train a select number of young European studies academics (at the Masters and Doctoral levels) on how they may be able to analyse and utilise the unique dataset that has been generated from "EU through the Eyes of Asia" project in their own research work.

 

The co-organisers will select 20 participants (up to 10 from Asia and up to 10 from Europe) to participate in this four-day event. Upon completion of the workshop, participants are also expected to complete an 8,000-word research paper each by the end of the year.

All selected participants will also have an opportunity to publish with the Asia-Europe Journal. Furthermore, the participant that writes the best paper will be offered a three-month research fellowship with NCRE - University of Canterbury

Interested parties should write in to the co-organisers with a 2,000-word proposal on this topic by 31 July 2008.

Germany to support Election Observation in Cambodia
The German Government is providing support to the programme "Building confidence in
the 2008 National Assembly Elections Process in Cambodia" which is being carried out by
the Committee for Free and Fair Elections (COMFREL). COMFREL is in the process of
training and deploying up to 10.000 election observers for a maximum coverage of the
election on the day of voting on July 27, 2008. The aim of this effort is to strengthen voter
confidence so that the participation in the 2008 National Assembly Vote is considerably
increased in comparison to the Commune Council elections in 2007 where voter turnout in
some areas had been unsatisfactory.
Upon signing the Agreement supporting the project with approx. 35 thousand US Dollars
Ambassador Frank M. Mann declared, that with this contribution the German Government
wants to express its keen interest in a fair and free progress of the 2008 National Assembly
Elections in Cambodia. Free and fair elections are the prerequisite of a democratic society.
Only through free and fair elections a strong mandate can be bestowed on the members of
the next National Assembly.
Participants in the programme will have the possibility to learn about the underlying
principles of a democratic election and the organisational conditions which have to be in
place. " I hope that many young Cambodians will have the chance to participate in the
programme and to deepen their knowledge about democracy. I do hope as well that as
many Cambodians as possible will exercise their right to vote" Ambassador Mann said.

Contest to award Asia-Pacific radio, TV programs

The Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) is accepting entries from all ABU members for its 2008 prizes, which will award six categories of radio and seven categories of TV programs. The deadline to submit entries is July 11.

The objective of the ABU Prizes is to promote the production of high level radio and TV programs, to raise educational and cultural standards and to strengthen international understanding among the peoples of the ABU member countries and regions.

Entries submitted must meet all of the contest rules and requirements. Each award is for US$2,000.

Newspapers to be awarded for reaching young readers

A competition sponsored by the World Association of Newspapers (WAN) will award newspapers that have devised innovative projects or activities for young readers (under age 25). The deadline to apply is July 31.

Projects submitted to the 2008 Young World Leader Prize can be in five categories: 1) Editorial: A newspaper content strategy; 2) Newspapers in Education (NIE): Use of the newspaper as a teaching tool; 3) Public Service: Public service project in areas such as press freedom, literacy, youth civic involvement, etc.; 4) Brand: Other projects that improve a newspaper brand's relationship with the young; or 5) Newspapers & Literacy: An effective project that supports the basic ability to read and write.

Each winner will receive US$2,310. Each participant must send in a Power Point of their project in French or English.
