Video journalists interested in freelance opportunities with an online international news network are being invited to send their resumes and work samples to the Video Journalism Movement.

Journalists will be expected to complete local news stories in a 1 to 2 week period. Stories should have an international angle and be for a worldwide audience.  VJ Movement will pay journalists a flat fee for every story submitted.

There is no deadline for application, as VJ Movement is constantly looking for freelancers.

An international award that will be presented as part of the British Press Awards in March, 2009, will honor a courageous foreign journalist who has battled oppression. Nomination deadline: January 23.

The winner of the International Journalist of the Year award will be chosen by the British Press Awards Academy of about 100 senior journalists.

Nominations must be sent by the Foreign Press Association and the World Association of Newspapers.

Young journalists sought to contribute to One Young World blogPosted on: 13/11/2008

A new organization is seeking young journalists age 23-28 from around the world who are interested in national and international issues including current affairs, media and environment.

Chosen journalists will write a weekly blog for the organization's Web site, which is committed to finding leaders of the future.

English preferred but all languages welcome. Chosen bloggers will have the opportunity to attend the inaugural summit of the organization - One Young World - in London, from July 6 to 9, 2009.

The One Young World summit will be live-streamed to the Internet, and will consist of potential young leaders from every country in the world, and from all sectors, considering resolutions on the role of global business, of politicians, the influence of the media, the environment and co-operation among world religions. The Opening Ceremony will be led by Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

Broadcast conference in India to feature talks

Broadcast executives are invited to attend the 15th BES Expo 2009, a conference and exhibition organized by India's Broadcast Engineering Society on February 23 to 25 in New Delhi, India. Registration is ongoing.

The conference -- with an estimated 1,000 delegates and 5,000 participants -- will feature presentations by experts from India and abroad on current and future radio and TV technologies.

There are a range of registration rates depending on the status of the participant. Exhibit attendance is free.

The Pacific Journalism Review (PJR) is inviting journalists to submit articles and commentaries about diversity, identity and the media in the Asia-Pacific region for their May 2009 edition. Deadline for submission is December 20.

PJR is a journal covering media issues and communication in Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific. While one objective is research into Pacific journalism theory and practice, the journal is also interested in advertising, communication, information technology, government, media studies, politics and public administration.

Submitted articles related to media and journalism theory and practice will also be considered.

Filmmakers from around the world who focus on social issues may submit their best works to The Media That Matters Film Festival. Deadline: January 9.

The festival highlights short films on the most important topics of the day for local, global, and online communities with the goal of engaging audiences and inspiring them to take action.

Entries must be no longer than 12 minutes. Possible themes include: Media Literacy, Human Rights, Elections & Democracy, Sustainability & the Environment, LGBTQ & Sexual Identity, Youth Activism and Racial Justice.

The festival will select 12 finalists, who will receive US$1,000 each to assist them in future filmmaking efforts.

There is an entry fee of US$25 for general submissions; US$10 for students over 18; and free for youth 18 and under.

Journalism organizations worldwide have until January 15 to nominate candidates for the 2009 UNESCO World Press Freedom Prize.

The prize will honor a person, organization or institution that has made a notable contribution to the defense and/or promotion of press freedom in the world, especially if risk is involved.

The winner will receive US$25,000 during the World Press Freedom Day conference on May 3, 2009 in Qatar.

The nomination form must be completed in English or French and sent to UNESCO, Division for Freedom of Expression, Democracy and Peace, 1, rue Miollis, 75732 Paris, cedex 15, France.
