Annual Media Student Awards calling for entries

Undergraduate media students and 2007/2008 graduates from around the world are invited to submit their creative media projects for the IBDA'A annual Media Student Awards. Deadline for entries is October 9.

The awards will be held in Dubai and will recognize talented students in categories like digital photography, TV documentary and journalism (non news).

Short-listed candidates are flown to Dubai on an all-expense-paid trip to attend the awards ceremony courtesy of Dubai Media City.

Winners will receive prestigious internships, prizes and trophies.

Global Undergraduate Exchange Program for FY 2009

 

The Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy is pleased to announce the opportunity to compete for the 2009 Global Undergraduate Exchange Program (Global UGRAD Program) which is sponsored by the Educational and Cultural Affairs Office of the U.S. Department of State.

The Global UGRAD Program will provide one-semester and academic-year scholarships to outstanding undergraduates for non-degree programs at accredited U.S. institutions.  Scholarships will be available in all academic fields of study except Medicine, Nursing, Veterinary medicine, and Pharmacology.

The length and start date of the scholarship award will depend upon the applicant's interests, the need for pre-program English language training, as well as placement option and availability of funds.  Students accepted into the full academic year program will travel to the U.S. for the fall 2009.  Students accepted into the one-semester program will travel for the fall 2009 or in the winter (January) 2010.

Eligible applicants must:

• Be currently enrolled in an undergraduate degree program and who will have completed their first year of undergraduate study prior to starting their UGRAD Program.
• Have at least one semester or an equivalent term to complete at their home institutions upon completion of their UGRAD Program.  The UGRAD semester or academic year must not be the last academic term of their undergraduate study.
• Be highly motivated non-elite or less-privileged undergraduate students who demonstrate leadership through academic work, community involvement, and extracurricular activities.
• Have a good knowledge of English with minimum TOEFL score of 500 or 173 on Computer based TOEFL, 61 on Internet-based TOEFL.
• Have no previous study experience in the United States.
  

Application Instructions:

Interested students who do not already have an official TOEFL score of 500 or above should plan to take the Institutional TOEFL Practice (ITP) on November 1, 2008 at the Royal University of Phnom Penh.  Registration for the ITP is available through the Educational Advising Center at RUPP (room 103) from Monday-Friday, with a registration deadline of October 24, 2008.  Please contact Mr. Hang Chanthon for registration of the ITP at 023-884-320.

Award to recognize excellent reporting on rice, rice-related issues

As Asia's rice heritage faces threats in an era of globalization, journalists from South Asia, East Asia and the Pacific can enter the 2008 Asia Pacific Rice Journalist Award, which awards writers who effectively educate the public on the role of rice in cultures, communities and societies in the region.

Articles for submission must have been published between September 1, 2007 and December 31, 2008. The deadline for applications is January 2, 2009. The winner will recieve US$1,000, a plaque and a certificate.

College journalism students invited to Washington, D.C.

Fellowships and Awards, Young Journalists

College journalism students are invited to apply for the 2009 Scripps Howard Foundation Semester in Washington Program. Six chosen interns, including one international student, will work for Scripps Howard in Washington, D.C.

Interns' stories are published on a Web-based wire: www.shfwire.com. Some of their stories may go to the Scripps Howard News Service's 400 client newspapers. Interns may write for hometown or campus newspapers and earn internship or independent study credits through their universities.

Participants will also tour Washington journalism and government institutions, hear from guest speakers and meet weekly to discuss issues in journalism.

The program is open to college students studying print or online journalism. It is not open to graduates or graduate students. Participants will receive a stipend and free housing in furnished apartments in Washington.
