Scholarship for Master Programme on International Peace Studies

The International Peace Studies Dual Campus Master Programme is a shared initiative between the Nippon Foundation and the University for Peace, in collaboration with Ateneo de Manila University, which aims to provide students from Japan and other Asian countries with an opportunity to pursue a peace studies post graduate degree with a content-based language-training module. This offers the support for individuals who do not have a proficient command of English to work in this increasingly common international language and to become comfortable in their professional abilities as they gain academic skills. As part of the programme, students have also the opportunity to apply their academic and practical knowledge through a four-month internship at the end of the Master courses.

The reception of applications to the Dual Campus Master Programme on International Peace Studies is currently open. Students accepted in the programme will be automatically granted full scholarships provided by the Nippon Foundation. A full scholarship includes: tuition fee, the language module, academic materials, and air travel and living expenses during the period of studies.

Description of the ProgrammeThe Dual Campus Master Programme on International Peace Studies is designed to enable students from diverse cultures and backgrounds to attain a deep understanding of the central issues of peace and security which will determine the future of humanity. Through their coursework, participants in the programme broaden their base of knowledge and engage with the major concepts, themes, and debates within international peace and conflict studies, preparing themselves for work with NGOs, governments, aid agencies, the UN and other organizations where a deep understanding of theses issues is critical.

The programme provides students with the required theoretical and practical post graduate education to contribute to the work of building international peace. Furthermore, it empowers students to conceptualize the key challenges faced by the international community, and the most promising potential areas and courses of action through an interdisciplinary and multicultural programme.

In this 19-month intensive academic programme, the students undertake courses at Ateneo de Manila University in the Philippines as well as at the San José UPEACE headquarters in Costa Rica. It is accomplished in three terms which start at the end of the language-training module.

The Dual Campus M.A. programme has been planned primarily for receiving students from several Asian countries where English is not a widely used language, such as Cambodia, Indonesia, Japan, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam. Exceptionally, students from other Asian countries may be admitted.

Scholarships from the Belgian government

Belgian development cooperation works according to three distinct systems: direct (bilateral), multilateral and indirect development cooperation. Direct development cooperation is implemented by the Belgian government through the Belgian Technical Cooperation (BTC), in close cooperation with the governments of 18 countries in the South. Multilateral development cooperation goes through international organisations and agencies like the UN. Indirect development cooperation goes through DGDC-funded organisations like VLIR.

There are mainly two sources of scholarships: direct funding (Belgian Bilateral Scholarships) through the Belgian embassies and BTC on the one hand, and indirect funding via those organizations like VLIR.

VLIR offers a number of scholarships every year, so that students from developing countries can
access these programmes.

Please note that the VLIR scholarship programme is aimed at individuals from a particular context who meet specific requirements. VLIR provides scholarships to people from developing countries with a minimum of professional experience who occupy key or strategic positions at an institution in their native country. The opportunities for knowledge transfer and knowledge application and transfer after the scholar returns home, is an important scholarship selection criterion.

A post of Adviser for Communication and Information is presently open for recruitment at UNESCO Office in Tehran. The major responsibility of this post is to serve as UNESCO Adviser for Communication and Information in the following countries covered by the UNESCO Office Tehran: Afghanistan, Iran (Islamic Republic of), Pakistan and Turkmenistan.

More particularly, the incumbent of the post will have to: analyze, evaluate and contribute to the development of Sector wide approaches and strategies for harnessing the potential of information and communication for development in cluster countries, in consultation with relevant stakeholders; plan and implement programme activities included in the UNESCO Programme and Budget; develop new project options and proposals to be funded by contributions received for the International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC) and the Information for All Programme (IFAP).

Caucasus magazine seeking environmental articles

Seminar to help journalists report responsibly on trauma, violence

A four-day seminar being held in Chicago, Illinois from November 11 to 15 will teach journalists how to report responsibly on violence and other traumatic events. The deadline to apply is July 30. 

The Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma will provide six or more fellowships for the seminar.  Journalists must be mid-career print or broadcast journalists. All expenses are paid.

Dialogue on ICT's Contribution to Building Your Tertiary Education Readiness for Change

UNESCO, with the sponsorship of Microsoft, is hosting The 2008 Education Leaders Forum, held in conjunction with the 2008 Imagine Cup World Finals. The Imagine Cup is a worldwide ICT competition that brings together the brightest young students from tertiary education around the world, a truly global competition focused on finding solutions to real world issues. The theme for Imagine Cup 2008 is "Imagine a world where technology enables a sustainable environment.

The 2008 Education Leaders Forum extends an opportunity to government leaders and educational influencers to share their insight, perspectives, and long-standing experience as innovative problem solvers. The forum will explore issues and propose innovative solutions to the unique challenges of transforming tertiary education. Current hurdles and successes in the transformation of quality post secondary education, and the role of ICT in those countries achieving significant improvements will be presented through interactive discussions and plenary sessions. Nonprofit film institute to support social documentaries

The U.S.-based Sundance Institute Documentary Film Program will award up to $1.5 million in grants to support documentary films focused on contemporary social issues. Interested participants must submit a copy of their film dialogue transcript along with an application by July 7.

The program encourages the exploration of innovative nonfiction storytelling, and promotes the exhibition of documentary films to a broader audience. Awards will be announced in November.

Festival calls for multimedia work by students, young professionals

Young professionals and students under the age of 30 can submit original projects in the field of e-contents and design for a multimedia festival, which will be held November 27 to 29 in Graz, Austria. The deadline to apply is June 30. 

The Europrix Multimedia Awards for 2008 will showcase chosen projects, awarding top applicants for excellent achievements at the festival. The three-day ceremony will provide chosen participants an opportunity to network and exchange ideas with multimedia newcomers, instructors, media editors and journalists. A Top Talent Award will be awarded to a select winner from all categories. 

Applicants may be from the European Union or the European Free Trade Association (Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein). Persons from Croatia, Israel, Serbia and Turkey may also register.

Though projects are not required to be in English, registration must be completed in English.

Reuters offers workshop on writing international news

The Reuters Foundation is offering a course on international news writing for journalists from the developing world in London from August 11 to 22. Last day to apply: June 27.

The course will focus on the writing of international news, as practiced by Reuters and other global news organizations. Through practice exercises, emphasis will be placed on improving basic reporting skills including accuracy, impartiality, speed, clarity and structure.

Scholarships are available for journalists from the developing world with limited recourses. Partial scholarships are also offered to journalists who can afford to pay for their costs through their organizations. Regular tuition fees are UK£2000 (US$3,905) for travel and accommodations for 10 days.

Those interested should have fluency in English and have worked for print or other media organizations for at least two years. Interested persons must submit a 250-word essay outlining their career, two recent examples of their work in English, and a statement of 250-500 words describing why this workshop would benefit them.

the Hubert H. Humphrey Program

Journalists participating in the Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program are offered a ten-month stay at a leading journalism college in the United States to study journalism and undertake professional affiliations at top U.S. news organizations.

The program includes financial support for studies, travel, workshops and seminars, a monthly stipend, funds for books and a computer subsidy. Most Humphrey journalists are assigned to the Philip Merrill College of Journalism at the University of Maryland, one of the top journalism programs in the United States, whereas Fellows from other professional fields can go to one of 15 host campuses throughout the United States.

Fellows take classes in journalism, public affairs, government, or other fields of their choice from the rich offerings at the University of Maryland. In addition, Fellows participate in field trips, workshops, lectures and many other offerings available in the metropolitan Washington, D.C. area – only a 30-minute subway ride away. Fellows often use some of their professional stipend for travel within the United States.

Applicants should have a minimum of five years of substantial professional experience, limited or no experience in the United States, demonstrated leadership qualities and commitment to their communities. Most applicants have English skills and undergraduate degrees.

The Humphrey Fellowship is a non-degree program which requires professional work as well as academic study. Fellows are accepted to the University of Maryland as "Advanced Special Students" under a separate process from degree-seeking students and are not required to submit standardized test scores or proof of financial means.

To apply: Prospective applicants should contact the American Embassy or Fulbright Commission in their home country for complete application details. A listing of eligible countries and the contact details of the relevant American Embassy or Fulbright Commission offices can be found on the Institute of International Education website.

The University of Maryland - or any other participating university - does not have applications. Prospective Fellows are nominated by the U.S. Embassy or binational commission in their home country, which sets priorities for the recruitment of candidates in different professional fields. It is important, therefore, for interested applicants to contact the Embassy or commission in his/her country with any questions and to obtain an application.

Citizens, dual citizens and permanent residents of the United States are not eligible to apply.
