Fellowships to help Asian journalists improve skills

Journalists who live in Asia are invited to apply for a fellowship to study for three months at Nanyang Technological University's communication school in Singapore. Deadline: November 15.

The Asia Journalism Fellowships provide a three-month break for active journalists to improve their professional skills and deepen their understanding of media trends. Fellows will participate in informal seminars and intensive workshops, as well as meet with key newsmakers in Singapore.

Candidates must have at least five years of journalism experience in any medium, leadership potential, and be fluent in English. Freelancers are welcome to apply.

Participants will receive airfare, accommodation, and a stipend of US$1,500 per month.

The Fellowship is sponsored by Temasek Foundation, a nonprofit organization based in Singapore that seeks to contribute to sustainable growth and a bright future of hope and opportunities for people in Asia.

Media invited on trip to most cluster bomb affected country

Journalists can join a media trip to Laos, the country most affected by cluster bombs in the world, from October 19 to 21.

The Cluster Munition Coalition is organising the trip, which comes ahead of the signing of a groundbreaking treaty banning cluster bombs by over 100 governments in December.

The trip will include interviews with victims in and around their homes, access to hospitals, a prosthetic limb center, the chance to film/photograph clearance teams including a live demolition and a visit to The Plain of Jars, the heritage site denied to the world because of extensive cluster bomb contamination.

The final day of the trip will be at the South East Asia regional conference on the Convention on Cluster Munitions.

Journalists can join the trip at any point, but will be expected to cover their own flight and hotel costs.

Tokyo workshop will allow students to be news assistants

Undergraduate and graduate students who are interested in working in journalism may attend a journalism training workshop on November 29 in Tokyo, Japan. Deadline: November 14.

Organized by the Foreign Correspondents' Club of Japan (FCCJ), the workshop will provide an introduction to journalism. Students will learn about interviewing, fact-gathering and writing techniques, as well as participate in a mock news event, including a mock press conference.

Participants may enter their names on a part-time student assistant list that will be made available to FCCJ journalists, who are interested in hiring a news assistant.

The all-day event is open to foreigners and will be conducted in English. There are 60 spots available. Registration costs 2,000 yen (about US$19.50), which includes lunch.

Photography awards to honor works showing humanitarian action

Photojournalists of any nationality can now submit entries for the 12th Luis Valtueña International Humanitarian Photography Award, which aims to award images related to humanitarian action. Deadline for submissions: November 5.

The competition is open to professional and amateur photographers who are dedicated to uncovering themes related to international cooperation and social exclusion, human rights violations, armed conflicts, natural disasters, refugee and immigrant populations, socially excluded groups, etc.

Each participant can submit up to three photographs, which may be in black and white or color; in TIFF or JPEG format. Only works carried out between January 2006 and November 2008 and which have not been submitted to previous editions will be accepted.

Journalists worldwide can apply for poverty reduction fellowship opportunity

Journalists in developing countries are being invited by Panos London to apply for a poverty-reduction journalism fellowship. Deadline for application is October 13.

Three applicants will be chosen to write a short series of print features or produce a short series of radio interviews between October and December, 2008.

Applicants will be chosen on merit but priority will be given to the strong applications from Uganda, Tanzania, Mozambique, Zambia, Kenya, Bangladesh and Pakistan.

Journalists can apply for fellowships to attend climate change summit

Journalists from Asia, Africa, the Caribbean, Latin America or the Middle East are invited to apply for climate change fellowships that will allow journalists to take part in media activities at the UN climate change summit, being held in Pozna�, Poland in December.

The deadline for applications is October 13.

The fellowships, which are being offered through the Climate Change Media Partnership, will allow selected journalists to enhance their knowledge of environmental issues and to develop their professional journalism skills through media activities offered during the summit.

The Climate Change Media Partnership will provide travel, travel insurance, accommodation and a daily subsistence expense allowance to the journalists selected. Journalists must arrange their own visas.
